Setting the Universe to rights in a few easy steps…

10 of the Reasons why Star Trek Voyager is the best.

And also, the only Star Trek worth watching from start to finish. These are not all of my millions of reasons. But they are a great 10 reasons. Read on.

1. Captain Kathryn Janeway. My respect for this woman, and the real-life woman who portrays her, Kate Mulgrew, is unparalleled. BEST. CAPTAIN. EVER. She has many admirable qualities. Courageous. Intelligent. Direct. Tough. No-nonsense. A bit of a maverick. Not afraid to take chances. Daring. Unorthodox. Spirited. Gutsy. Intuitive. Inquisitive. Noble. Confident. Loyal. Demanding. Principled. A natural leader. Brash, but with the skills to justify that confidence. More accessible than the other captains, most likely because of her gender. More in tune with her crew. Charismatic. Protective. Caring. Stern when she must be. Takes care of her people. Also has those human flaws which make her all the more believable, all the more human. Flawed. Arrogant. Stubborn. Recalcitrant. Proud. Sometimes unreasonable. Prickly. A little big-headed on occasion. Trusts her head and her heart, which can lead to internal conflict. Sometimes self-righteous. Cocky. She doesn’t know how to disguise who she is, and she doesn’t try.

For all of these reasons and more, she is an admirable human being on every level. I could go on for pages and pages. I will restrain my urge to do so. The above paragraph is enough to demonstrate my respect for her. Star Trek Voyager is a great show. She makes it greater.

Best. Captain. Ever.

Best. Captain. Ever.

2. The setting. A Starfleet crew pulled against their will to the other side of the galaxy, literally, who then have to find a way home, seventy thousand light years away, seventy five years at maximum speeds. This takes the essence of what Star Trek is all about, strips away the crap and leaves only the best aspects to form the core plot. A plot that is omnipresent for the entire run, the only one of the Treks with a coherent and continuing plot-line, making it seem like a saga, rather than a series of loosely connected stories. The show does develop and change and eventually becomes more about the journey and less about the destination, the quest to reach home takes perhaps a passenger seat rather than a back seat, but it is always there. The ship becomes their home, their friends their family.

3. The exploration. They actually explore WHERE NO-ONE HAS GONE BEFORE. They don’t simply shuttle annoying ambassadors from one well colonised world to another, or run stupid cargo missions. I saw one episode of The next Generation where, if you can believe this, the main purpose of the mission and the main threat of the episode came from six cargo canisters that the USS Enterprise was shuttling from one world to another. (Insert derisory laugh here, the sort comedian Billy Connolly does when taking the piss).  FUCK OFF! Medical supplies?! The flagship of Starfleet and its running SUPPLIES?! Six tiny little canisters? And one of them is FAULTY?! You call that a sound premise? That isn’t acceptable even as a sub-plot! Cargo canisters in a sci-fi show?! What is happening?! Where are the freighters, the small cargo haulers? I’m so glad the writers not only improved, but rewrote the book on what works and what definitely doesn’t for later episodes. The episode is saved by the presence of Reginald Barclay, I believe its Hollow Pursuits. He is in Voyager in later eps and therefore utterly cool in my books.

Everywhere the USS Voyager goes, every planet they set foot on, every step they take, every light-year they travel, every particle of air they breathe, every ray of sunlight they feel on their skin, (nearly) every alien species they encounter, every phenomenon they discover, every danger they triumph over, every sector of space they explore and chart, it is all unknown until they arrived, uncharted, discovered by them, seen first by them, because no-one from their homes has been there before. Exploration and discovery, two of the best objectives a life-form can devote their life to, taken to the extreme. Plus another admirable objective, protecting your home, your people, your crew, your friends, your family, and the universe you live in. From the Borg, from Species 8472, from crazy time-travelling megalomaniacs, from the Vidiians, the Hirogen, and many others. The records they set ain’t gonna be broken, I’ll tell you that much. Take that, every other crew ever.

And they don’t pussy foot around aliens. Voyager doesn’t provoke fights, when conflict occurs, it is usually they who are fired upon first. They strike first if the aliens are already enemies, and at no other time. But look out if you fire on them. Because they aren’t going to sit there and take it. You won’t see them trying pointlessly to keep a sanctimonious alien commander happy.

4. The enemies. Part of what used to turn me off Star Trek was the weak and extremely nonthreatening aliens with shit make-up. I only liked two of the enemies pre-Voyager: Cardassians are great enemies, I’ll give TNG credit for that. TNG holds the origin of the Borg, fair play, bravo to TNG. However, the Borg are not only a far more present and ever-menacing threat in VOY, the USS Voyager actually sticks it to them and takes them on. And actually does severe damage to the mighty Collective, greatest threat to everyone everywhere. And they actually look menacing in Voyager, instead of guys in rubber suits with pipes super-glued on and who look ill because of too much grey make-up.  Borg: much better in Voyager. Hirogen: Big, scary, menacing, great make-up. Species 8472: Wow, huge, three-legged brick shithouse aliens.  Vidiians: Chilling organ-harvesters, with a real sense of danger if you get caught by these guys. The show even features a lot of great ‘one-off’ aliens, the Devore, the Vaadwaur, the Swarm.

Um, this is a Borg Cue. Duh. :)

Um, this is a Borg Cue. Duh. 🙂

5. The welcome lack of Redshirts. The case of Ensign Ricky who dies almost immediately upon setting foot upon an alien planet or ship with monsters or hostile natives or a booby trap, whatever. I’m sorry but there is a distinct lack of any kind of care or leadership shown towards these men and women. Getting into danger is part of Starfleet life, yes, terrific. But its also the idea to get your people safely through it. Kirk neglects these members of his crew, these young men and women unlucky enough to get assigned aboard his ship and not be senior officers. He shows them no real care. It is also lazy story-telling. A death occurs to demonstrate the danger from a previously hidden booby trap or hostile spear-wielding natives. Taken in context of the lore, which sci-fi fans are known to do, that is a life that has been snuffed out simply to demonstrate a danger to the audience. A life is ended because of sheer incompetence and lack of care.

Looking at it from a leadership point of view, there is a fine line between protecting a member of your crew, and knowing when to step back and allow them to tackle a problem or danger themselves. And yes, Janeway crosses this line sometimes and moves into severe case of over-protectiveness-itis. From a leader, over-protectiveness is not necessarily an unattractive quality. In fact, it is a good thing. If I’m honest, I can think of a single example of the ‘pointless death’ scenario in Voyager, one example. A crewman is killed in the beginning of the episode One by a destructive nebula which destroys organic tissue. I think this was to save episode time. I’ll admit, lazy, but SOMETIMES a necessary evil to get on with the show, to show the absolutely lethal nature of the nebula. Not every bloody week though! There was no way his death could have been prevented, it was an unlucky incident, not a lack of care. Normally, as the crew has no access to reinforcements, deaths are seen and come about by enemy attacks or violent anomalies. Unfortunate yes, but explained and realistic given their situation.

Look at it this way: Which ship would you want to serve on?

USS Enterprise 1701: Not a ship I’d want to serve on if I planned to living past thirty. Which I DO.

USS Enterprise 1701-D (Picard’s ship): You’d die of fucking boredom if nothing else.

USS Enterprise 1701-E: Things are looking up here, but there’s still the overwhelming problem of the personalities of seventy-five percent of the senior staff.

Deep Space Nine: Do I really need to spell it out? I wouldn’t touch this ass-end of space on this train-wreck of a show with a light-year long barge pole.

USS Voyager: Yes please. I happily serve aboard this beauty. I’d take the dangers and the situation the ship is in, and I’d be honoured to serve under Captain Janeway.

6. The vessel. I’m not a tecnho-head who needs all the technology to be sound of science and all that crap, but the USS Voyager is the best looking ship by a considerable margin, has the best specs, is filled with the best crew, and looks the best in flight. And its not just a ship. Its their home. Oh, and also, in relation to exterior damage that they suffer during their frequent encounters with trouble: it would be repaired pronto. Janeway knows appearances are crucial, even if they’re not always to be trusted, and would not want to invite attack by other aggressive species by having damaged hull plating on her ship. They have the ability to recycle and replace damaged sections aboard Voyager, melt them down and reuse them, immediate repair after battle or damage of some other kind would be a high priority once the threat had passed or been dealt with. Some people say ‘Oh, but they don’t have Starbases to go to, so what the deal-?’ So…they don’t have to stop every few damn episodes at Starbases, hmm? GOOD! Who wants to see an episode where they sit in a Starbase and wait for repair or upgrades? That’s not exciting or interesting! They utilise alien ports on occasion, the Markonian Station and the station before the Nekrit Expanse spring to mind, and the crew are offered aid and assistance with repair from alien species that they help along the way, but I only need this to be implied. I don’t need to see it, and Voyager does not waste episodes on such unnecessary details. And why is the Enterprise always on its way from one Starbase or another? Seems that ship can’t spend more than five minutes alone without experiencing some kind of fault or needing a refit. AGAIN. Lucky for us there’s another crew out there having adventures, not sitting in stations twiddling their thumbs.

7. The story-lines. Some are unique and new, some are remakes of older formats. Voyager can do cerebral, and it can do action-packed. I won’t get deeply into this here, there’s plenty of blogosphere space left for that. To name a few of the best: The 37’s, Resistance, Deadlock, Death Wish, The Thaw, Sacred Ground, Future’s End, Scorpion, Scientific Method, The Killing Game, Hope and Fear, Night, Counterpoint, Bride of Chaotica, Dark Frontier, Equinox, Dragon’s Teeth, Blink Of An Eye, Good Shepherd, Unimatrix Zero, Workforce….and those are just a few examples. Voyager often breaks new ground, which is always a good thing, and sometimes retreads old ground or employs sci-fi cliche in its episode, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Point in fact: Season 7’s ‘Body and Soul’. There are many alien possession stories, but in this case one crewmember’s mind must house the mind of another to ensure his safety. The Doctor must hide inside Seven’s cortical array to prevent his deletion at the hands of hologram-fearing aliens. This has the unexpected side-effect of the Doctor finding himself in control of Seven’s body whilst she is aware of her perceptions, but has no control over them. This proves that a fresh take on an old cliche is nothing to flinch from, either as a writer or a viewer. Sure, there are some eps that don’t work so well, can think of two or three that I personally don’t enjoy a great deal, but they are an exception rather than the rule. And the rule is: Quality.

8. The crew. BEST. CREW. EVER. A crew actually worth investing emotionally in, a crew worth caring about. A closer bond that develops between them all, whilst still maintaining that important distance where it needs to be maintained. There is a real emotional resonance in a lot of the scenes, as befitting a crew that has grown closer due to their circumstances. The character arcs in Voyager span whole seasons, even the whole show. Notable instances of this are as follows: Janeway/Chakotay, Janeway/Seven, Janeway/Paris, Janeway/Tuvok, Paris/Torres, Paris/Kim, Doctor/Seven, Chakotay/Torres, Neelix/Kes. Watching these relationships change and grow over the years, the interplay and connections between them shifting in meaning, depth and texture was very rewarding, added an extra dimension to the show and and extra meaning behind their adventures and actions. Oh, and they’re the best looking bunch as well.

9. From a more technical standpoint, the special effects are cracking, and are standing-up very well to the test of time. The cheese factor of earlier Treks is happily missing from Voyager. Most exterior shots have close to photo-realistic levels of realism, alien effects (even the obvious ‘guys and gals with stuff on their foreheads’) have great make-up, the costumes of the more detailed and different aliens are great, Hirogen body armour looks like body armour not the fake, light-weight material that it is in reality, the make-up of the Vidiians is marvellous and some of the best I’ve seen on Star Trek. Even one off aliens are given a lot of care and attention, for example the Monoeans seen in ‘Thirty Days’, or the scientist Turot seen in ‘Counterpoint.’ And the Borg look a hell of a lot more menacing in Voyager. The increased darkness, strobe and flashing lights on the cubes helps with the sense of menace, but the Borg costumes are more far superior in this show. It doesn’t look like some dude with grey face paint and a black rubber suit with tubes stuck on it. (NOTE: If you want more proof or are interested in finding out more about the superior special effects, check out my ‘Star Trek Voyager and Thematic Continuity’ post, where I go into more detail about special effects and alien make-up, etc. I don’t want to repeat myself in lots of posts, its simpler to link.

10. The sense of humour. Wonderful normal and gallows humour is more prevalent in this show than in others, no doubt because of their location and situation. The show can, like other Treks, be po-faced and overly serious, but that is the tone that Trek takes with its story-lines. But the humour is still present and correct, and adds something extra to the show. And the comedy episodes occasionally seen in Trek, episodes that are meant to be funny, actually are funny. I like it when my favourite shows descend into temporary silliness, so the scenes from’ Bride of Chaotica’ with the crew camping it up like the Original Series crew, or the Doctor having to ‘take command’ of the ship and threatening an enemy vessel with an imaginary weapon Voyager does not actually possess in ‘Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy’ really hit the mark. This kind of wacky and totally left-field humour is welcome in anything, from The Simpsons, see episode ‘Homer Badman’ for a hilarious example, (See you in hell, CANDY BOY! You know the joke I mean…), at any given moment in any given episode of Futurama (best animated comedy ever) and at various points along both Red Dwarf and Mystery Science Theater 3000’s runs. Such instances of random humour are quite rare in Voyager, as opposed to the more frequent normal sense of humour, if such a word can be applied to such a subjective matter, but when they do crop up, lols abound.

To summarize the point of this blog: BEST. SHOW. EVER.

Some people say Voyager isn’t like the other Treks. To which I say this:

GOOD.

You think I’m biased?

You’re goddamn fucking right I am.

Voyager out.

  2. I totally agree with everything about this post!
Voyager is definitely, with out a shadow of doubt, the # 1 Star Trek show! It’s really nice to know that there is someone out there who thinks the same way that I do!
    Thanks

I agree. I started to watch Voyager again on Netflix and I notice every time an episode finishes, I applaud the show and said to myself Voyager is definitely better than The Next Generation.

Umm i agree with your points BUT in MY personal opinion i prefer DS9 than TNG and VOY because DS9 shows what life in the 24th century is like on an average spacestation with mixed races running about not that starfleet life on a clean and orderly spacecraft.

    July 10, 2013 at 10:17 pm

    • Yes, I will agree that DS9 shows more angles on Federation culture, agreed. One thing it does do very well. Thanks for your comment.

I absolutely agree with everything, one main thing that got me in Voyager was the Borg, they looked SO real compared to other series, the borg have always been my favourite villain in the Star Trek series but in Voyager they just look amazing :p

    July 19, 2013 at 7:14 pm

    • Thank you very much for your kind comment! 🙂 Regarding the Borg, They were comedy bad guys in TNG, grey guys in lycra suits with rubber tubes. Woah, that’s scary…. *cringes in cheesy embarrassment at the crappy enemies* Yeah, its not all about the SFX, but they were poorly executed and just not threatening enough with bad dialogue and their goal of assimilation of all worthy lifeforms not fully utilised into the massive threat they could have been. It should have been full-scale war/invasion, not the occasional ineffectual guest appearance. We finally got that full-scale version in Voyager, and heck was it worth the wait!

Agree with a LOT of this, especially in how well it’s aged. Definitely my favourite Trek show with TNG second. One thing, yes the Borg makeup was laughable in TNG but the Battle at Wolf 359 was not! That was serious stuff, there’s never that level of Borg annihilation in Voyager.

    July 30, 2013 at 10:33 pm

    • Thanks for the comment! Yeah, okay, I’ll admit, Wolf 359 was well done. Voyager was too busy kickin’ ass for any o’ that! 😉 Seriously though, the Borg did hit Voyager hard a few times during the shows run, it’s not like they had it easy. And having to make that hard call between a rock and an evil place, choosing between Species 8472 or the Borg? Never anything like that on TNG.

Dude you freakn nailed it, I have been saying this for years, what voyager had to go through freakn blows away any other trek. The episode called “void” (I think) was one of my favs, Janeway was incredible in that episode. The very end when janeway comes back in time, I was leaping out of my chair when voyager sailed through those borg ships!!

    December 25, 2013 at 4:53 am

    • Fuck YEAH! It blows them out of the water! I was punching the air to when they had that spectacular homecoming! Thanks for your comment! 🙂

  11. A-Mind-Forever-Voyaging

I started watching Voyager Season 4 with my daughter a couple of days ago — it still totally rocks even after all these years. I has aged so well and the acting is actually really amazing for a TV series.
As a joke I searched for “Yoyager is the best show ever” on Google and your page popped up. Totally agree with you and what you wrote in the article above!

    February 12, 2014 at 8:41 pm

    • The acting is very solid, some of the best I recall from late 90’s early Noughties tv. Certainly better than the other Treks, which sometimes is laughably bad or embarrassingly camp. the acing from the other shows doesn’t help with the negative view many non-Trekkers have of Trek. I HATED Trek before watching Voyager, I mean literally hated it. Voyager rewrote all the rules of everything I thought I knew about Trek, and for that I am grateful to it. It gave me years of real enjoyment. Thanks for your comment! 🙂

    Please delete my accident post.

    Now, to my intended post.

Your post was brilliant. Voyager is the best without a doubt as a whole. I was never a star trek fan until I watched voyager! The first episode I watched it looked a bit tacky but I gave it a chance and was glad I did. After, I tried other series but none had the appeal except for TNG. Enterprise is horrible especially with that awful theme song. The way I feel about voyager is how I feel about Stargate Universe. What really drew me in was there dilemma of finding a way home. They didn’t have the luxury of going to Earth whenever they could. As a result, they experienced much more than boring missions. I was happy to find your post to see voyager at the top of your list as it should be!

    February 15, 2014 at 9:23 pm

    • I think the odyssey home was one of the things that originally drew me to Voyager, and more importantly, kept me watching for its entire run. Whilst not an entirely original premise, it was handled and told in a very unique and interesting way that kept me hooked. It was the thing that tied it all together, unlike the other crews whose missions were vague at best or constantly changing, these people had a single focus, to get home, and they accomplished a lot more along the way and had a lot of awesome exploits sometimes linked to their main quest, sometimes not. It was the best of both with Voyager! It was never a case of ‘let’s go to Earth every four freakin’ episodes’ which pissed me off about TNG. It was, for lack of a better word, so often really boring. Love it or hate it, one could never level the same accusation at Voyager. Thanks for your comment, and for saying my post was brilliant, I really appreciate it. 🙂

Your post made my day and you were spot on with every point. I have tried watching other Star Trek series but they all seem uneventful compared to Voyager; I always find myself rewatching old Voyager episodes. Which series do you recommend after watching Voyager?

    Thanks again for the post.

    March 23, 2014 at 4:08 am

    • That’s because they ARE uneventful compared to Voyager. 🙂 Even the war story lines in DS9 are criminally wasted by a dull crew and poorly executed plots. Thanks for your comment. See my other reply for what I recommend to watch next.

      March 23, 2014 at 7:28 pm

  15. You post was amazing. All other Star Treks seem boring compared to Voyager. Which series would you recommend watching after Voyager?

    Thanks again

    March 23, 2014 at 4:13 am

    • Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. If you mean what other Trek series I recommend, I would have to say none of them, but The Next Generation if there was nothing else on. In terms if sci-fi, I highly recommend Fringe, a fantastic blend of sci-fi, cop show, police procedural and mind-bendingly out there story lines. Time travel, alternate realities, monsters, danger, disasters, world-threatening potential apocalypses, it literally has tall. Plus a great set of strong characters acted very well by the cast, Olivia and Walter in particular. Check it out! 🙂 Thanks for your comment!

I think that the reason the STV is so hated is because the characters are so believable. They have flaws there not perfect… I personally think its the best in the series….

    June 27, 2014 at 2:02 pm

    • That’s an excellent point, Captain Shadow. (Cool name, btw). They are believable as human beings, as opposed to the weird almost automaton like ‘people’ from TNG and DS9. They never responded to situations in a way I could relate to, it was always either a total lack of realistic emotions (the unfeeling, way too perfect robots on the Enterprise D, with the possible exception of Picard’s reaction to assimilation), forced and unemotional patriotism (Sisko’s uninspiring ‘speeches’) or narrowing the massive spectrum of human emotion into such a minimalist portrayal it was painful. (What I refer to as ‘Shatnering). Voyager’s crew felt real, they felt relatable, they reacted to the good and the bad that they so frequently had to deal with in a way that I could understand. I would find myself thinking ‘yes, that’s how I would react if that happened to me.’ With the other crews, I have an urge to reach inside the TV and check for pulses to make sure they’re not robots. Apart from Data, of course. Yes, Voyager’s crew sometimes acted out of character, partially to show how people under immense strain can sometimes start to show that strain in tangible ways, and partially sometimes because the writers didn’t quite know how to handle the realistic characters they had created. But by and large, they felt like real, living life forms doing their best, often under the worst circumstances. And that is why I connect with them. And their gallows humour is simply wonderful, I love it!

      Thanks for your comment. 🙂

  17. Captian Shadow

That’s exactly my point… not to mention seven was a hot babe lol but she made her character very believable her battle with her individuality etc. My favorite character was the Dr. or the emh. When he turned into the ECH I was like hells yeah. Not to mention The USS enterprise had a 7 yr mission take 5 years Capt Janway had a 75 yr mission that took seven just saying 🙂

I did not watch any Star Trek in the 90s, so missed TNG,
VOY, everything. I began watching them
recently on Netflix and was pleasantly shocked at how terrific Voyager is. Voyager is the best Star Trek show since the original. I don’t quite get why some think TNG was better. I got bored with TNG and quit watching. Voyager may have suffered a bit from being under the TNG shadow at the time but it was clearly a more exciting, dynamic, interesting show. The criticism that characters were “inconsistent” makes little sense to me. People are inconsistent. That’s who we are, especially under stress. By accident or design, it’s part of what makes the show work.

Yeah, some episodes were better than others, as is true of
any show and the first 2 seasons are pretty bad. But I’ll take that over the steady but bland mediocrity of TNG anytime.

Voyager had all three of the three most interesting characters
since the original: Seven, Janeway and of course, The Doctor. There was also a tension and energy that rose far above the flatness of other Star Trek series and movies alike. It was so apparent, I remembered some stating
the original show had that dramatic tension because the actors were tired and didn’t get along well. I looked it up and sure enough, same thing happened on Voyager.

I don’t support the routine creation of hellish work environments, but in the case of Voyager, I believe it really
    added something to the show.

Hi, I really like your blog and am a big fan of Voyager. My brother, dad and I watched it when i was a kid, every episode in a single breath. I also watched other series but none impressed me as much as Voyager. The characters are lovable, plot is very tense. I love this series so much that my brother and me decided to watch it again, for a third time!

    September 2, 2014 at 9:30 am

    • Roby

just wanted to add, I simply dont understand why so many fans can’t or won’t love Voyager, to me it’s the best of Star Trek I’ve seen, and I’ve seen it all!

      • Fuck yeah buddy! Thanks for the comment! 🙂

I always think Voyager explores many of the issues that were unfeasible (in universe wise) in The Alpha Quadrant, for example the sacrifice Janeway made in the first episode for a species they barley knew. The solution in The Alpha Quadrant would to be called for backup, this isn’t possible in Delta. The decisions Janeway makes throughout the series and the debate over the prime directive (eg: Kazon replicator story). Overall, Voyager is my second favourite series to Deep Space Nine. This is purely because of The Domion War & Bojaron Spirituality arcs that was awesome and very well delivered. Voyager is great, and is the Trek for me (only being 15) that started it all and started my obession. There is only two episodes I skip ‘Threshold’ & ‘The Chute’, apart from that, it I very well delived.

    September 5, 2014 at 8:16 pm

    • The brave sacrifice they made was part of what drew me in, in that very first episode. Courage such as that is a rare and wonderful thing. Thanks for the comment! 🙂

I seriously don’t know what other people are watching. Whenever I look up articles on voyager it’s usually talking about how the other shows are better. I don’t know what those people were watching but it definitely wasn’t voyager. Voyager and DS9 are my favourite TV shows of all time ! That’s right ! Not exaggerating. I am so glad I found this article, and yourself, the wise and all-knowing author :)! You Ma’am/Sir are a legend, pure and simple. I know you’ve pointed out some faults in DS9, but that’s okay. Everyone has an opinion. And I definitely agree with you. I think all these shows have their flaws in one aspect or another. But I’m with you. I grew up watching these great trek spin-off shows never even having seen a minute of TOS or TNG. And I’m biased toward them, no doubt haha. But every single point of yours I agree 100%! I grew up without any of my friends knowing what Star Trek was, let alone voyager. I’m almost 20 now, and personally I still absolutely love watching the show again and again, when I have the time that is. But you have definitely made a friend here today. Thank you for posting this article those years ago, and I hope you are still listening to these comments, especially this one, from a fellow lifetime voyager fan!!

    • Wow, thanks for the kind words, that’s some high praise there! And its ma’am. 😉 I am indeed still listening to these comments, so thank you again! Voyager FTW.

  22. I was there to see the first episode air. I met The Doctor and Admiral Parris at world con 2006. Voyager was for me, the best trek series. It brought back the exploration of space. It felt human. It felt like family. It was about the journey and the road less, or in this case, not taken. It was about keeping your morals and standards despite the isolation. Janeway will always be Best Captain, and Best Admiral, to me. Hell, she took on the Bord and won! Even destroyed the Borg! And she loves her coffee. People complained about the character development, or to them, the lack of, but failed to see that many did develop, so a lot, some a little. They learned to integrate together, to become a crew, a team, a family. In Federation space, that never would have happened.

True, there were some bad episodes, some worse than others, which will not be named. But to me, overall, this was perhaps the most human of the Trek series, and that makes it so appealing, because viewers can relate with the characters.

I absolutely love Voyager.I’m always so confused as to why it gets a bad rap.To me it’s far superior in every single aspect to the other Star Treks.Agree with everything you’ve said here!!

    July 6, 2016 at 2:19 am

    • Agreed! It is superior in every way, and those that see that are rewarded with a magnificent show to watch! Thanks for the comment! 🙂

The worst thing, for the 50th I went on Amazon to browse voyager on bluray THEY HAD NOTHING !

Voyager is the best series hands down.

I can’t believe it gets treated so badly

      August 23, 2016 at 6:36 pm

  25. I too believe that Voyager, and their crew, provided us with some of the finest plots, fabulous acting by many of its more notable crew. I really could go on and on and on .. and on about each episode and how it often brought me to tears, laughter, a saddened sense of loss, a thrilling battle or race against time. As the author of this article put it. BEST. SHOW. EVER. I truly appreciated your post. If possible, I’d love to discuss a joint effort between the two of us, as well as many featured guests, to put out a weekly Podcast. I have most everything we’d need and more. If this sounds like something you might at least like to chat about over Skype, just drop me an email, or reach out and Skype me.

    • Also, I so badly wanted to see everyone in NY for the show at the beginning of September. But my wife is Not feeling well, with her MS. If nothing more I wanted to tell the cast of Voyager that their acting, their roles, the variations the were given to explore and become anew character. Every one of the team, has earned a permanent and deep appreciation for the way they suck me into each new episode … and such a sad feeling when each episode came to the end.

You have become family to me. So, don’t ever hesitate if you need help. I’ll be there.

Voyager did many things that no trek ever has such as landing a Star ship on a planet “Basics”, A shuttle going underwater “Thirty days”, Partnering with the borg “Scorpion”, Getting a starship stuck in ice “Timeless”, Seeing in depth what the borg do “Dark Frontier”, Borg kids “Childs Play”(Just to name a few). It also had the best time travel episodes such as “Timeless”, “Relativity”, “Futures End”, “Year of hell” (technically) and Endgame. It by far had the best intro, not just different angles of a freaken space station like ds9. It also had the best series finale “Endgame” and was the only star trek series that ended well and happy. I also believe it was the only star trek series that could have made the 10 season mark. These are all the reasons why it was unique and my favourite and I completely agree with you 100%. I just don’t understand why some people hate it.

Yes you are so right My favourite And best ever too. A women like Janeway in charge could be all ten reasons

Thanks for writing this; I was worried for a minute I was the only one who appreciates this show the way it truly deserves.

Different to some of the people commenting here, I am actually a big fan of all the Star Treks. I didn’t get a chance to see Voyager until last (I was ill during most of its original run and I never found it on regular rerun until recently). And I have to say; I saved the absolute best till last!

I love this show. I feel so connected to and invested in the characters. Sometimes for a little while I even feel like I’m a bit like Lieutenant Barclay, living vicariously on Voyager.

And what I just can’t understand at all, is why, until I actually had the chance to watch it, all I really knew about Voyager was that it seemed like no one liked it? I mean dislike, even hatred of Voyager, is even a part of pop-culture itself now – Sheldon mocks it on The Big Bang Theory:
    (Series 8 Episode 06 – The Expedition Approximation;
“Raj: Sheldon, you know what I think of when I’m scared? Voyager.
Sheldon: Voyager the space probe or Voyager the Star Trek TV show?
    Raj: The space probe.
Sheldon: Good. Because I am too hot and tired to go on about how much I hate Voyager the TV show.”)

    How can this be? Why?
    It makes me sad.

    Anyway, thanks again.

  31. Awwwwww thank you, thank you, thank you for this! Like the others I agree 100% with every word you (brilliantly) wrote. BEST. STAR TREK. SERIES. EVER!. I looooooved Captain Janeway. I first watched the entire series in the 90s and then recently again on Netflix. I seriously don’t understand how I would wait a whole week to watch the next episode like I did (had to) the first time round. I was very exasperated by Janeway when she blew up the entity’s machine to save the Ocampo, but that is sooo Janeway, and really sets the tone of the kind of captain she was, and therefore what type of journey back home they’d have. And you’re right about the relationships…brilliantly crafted. I suppose B’Elana and Tom’ rocky relationship is one we’ve seen elsewhere, but Nelix and Tuvok’s sparring…excellent! And Chakotay…Gosh I could go on. I’m so glad I’ve found people who agree with me about Voyager. The world has righted itself. And you, are a scholar.

    March 6, 2017 at 12:34 am

  32. And am I the only one who absolutely loved Chakotay? Remember his Baby Mama drama before, thankfully the ‘real’ dad was revealed, or his brilliant performance in ‘Nemesis,’ the propaganda episode? Man, I love Voyager. I even like Neelix. I think B’Elanna is brilliant. Did I mention I love Voyager? I am, of course, aware that I’m doing a very Trekkie thing here by replying to a post that was made almost 10 years ago. So, yes, this is the future, and Voyager STILL rules!.

    March 6, 2017 at 10:24 pm

  33. Janeway or Seven Hmm

Haven’t seen much of DS9 and didn’t really like TNG, Voyager was definitely my favourite . Janeway was awesome and seven of nine was every guy’s ( and probably girls ) sexual fantasy. Neelix was whiny and couldn’t stand him, hould have killed him off. All up a good show, a few poor episodes but generally pretty exciting. Janeway was by far the best of all the captains. Cheers for the blog ma’am

    • My pleasure, thanks for reading!

      May 21, 2018 at 12:39 am

      • I also LOVE Voyager. I was able to see many of the actors in Vegas last June when I attended the conference. It was great! Being able to sit and listen to them just talk and laugh together was wonderful. I was also able to get my picture taken with several people clued in Kate Mulgrew. And now I’m coming up upon my eighth time watching the entire seven seasons of voyager one after another. You would think I get tired of it, but so far I’m still hooked. I hope you are too.

Loved your blog. I’ve always said Voyager was the best. Other Trekkies are too obsessed with Data and Picard to see clearly

Thank you truly and deeply for writing this.
It was almost like listening to my own thoughts about the hands down best star trek so far.

    JANEWAY forever!

I was never into Star Trek; the original series smells strongly of cheese, the next generation is boring, and let’s just face it: DS9 is garbage. Boring, completely uninteresting garbage. I never had high expectations for Voyager, but when I first saw it on Netflix, one episode in and I was completely absorbed by the premise and the interesting cast of characters.

It has so much more heart to it than other Star Treks… the characters are fleshed out, the series has a plot, there’s thematic elements, and there’s also humor. It’s the only Trek where, every once in a while, fun stuff actually happens. Like shuttle races, or that time the EMH had to team up with another hologram and learn to fly a ship. I’ve laughed at this show and never at another Star Trek.

There’s also serious stuff that I actually find compelling and interesting to watch, such as the cooperation with the Borg or that alliance with other aliens in the void. I actually got emotionally invested in this series, unlike the other Trek I kind of liked, The Next Generation, which was still bland and didn’t get me to care about anything.

But the best thing about the series? The captain, the biggest badass of all time. She’s downright savage sometimes; she’s killed a lot of people- but she never strikes first and she always tries to settle a peaceful agreement before charging weapons. Archer, on the other hand, seems to think shouting angrily at aliens is how you get them to agree with you, which is why I hate him in particular.

    July 17, 2017 at 7:46 pm

    • She is a badass. She’s the reason I came to the show, and I stayed for her and a million other reasons! She’s a protector, but like you said, could be savage if needed. I’d trust her to shoulder the burden of having to do unpleasant things for the right reasons, I never felt any of the other captains would have the spine to do so. Thanks for the comment! 🙂

  37. Erik Brickman

I absolutely adore Star Trek Voyager and this blog post 100% confirmed everything I feel about it. I especially like the fact that you detail all the pros (and sometimes cons) about the series compared to the other ones. The feeling I get from watching Voyager: that they’re so exposed in uncharted territory, that they HAVE to rely on eachother, that Janeway uses her femininity in an all-out-badass-captaincy is AWESOME! And the interviews in later days where she describes just how much testosterone there was flying around, and yet she loved it AND managed to stand fast to her own power.
Janeway is like a mini-Voyager inside the series, steaming ahead among her fellow actors and showing the way for the to go. The ONLY thing I actually complain about is Seven of Nine. Sure, I am man, and as such is thoroughly susceptible to her charms. BUT! It’s a shame she got the center of attention after so much hard work by Kate Mulgrew to get acceptance from ther producers that women on a starship should NOT be primarily sex objects. And also the progress of how she turned from “borgness” to humanity is WAY too fast and there’s just too little grittiness in that process. She should’ve become more of a psychological trauma victim when she started returning to human standards. Otherwise, I looove almost everything with Voyager and was sad they didn’t make another 7 seasons!

    September 24, 2017 at 8:48 am

  38. Erik Brickman

100% agree with all this list has to offer! Who cannot looove this series? It has everything AND it kickstarts right off the bat with a kick in the pants action episode! That’s how it’s supposed to be done. I personally also love TNG, and especially the movie First Contact. But hey, that can also be because of the KICKASS theme that who wrote (and who also wrote the Voyager theme)…? Jerry Goldsmith of course! Phew, that Voyager theme is HALF the reason the series is so good! I still think, though that the last episode of the series kind of ruined the overall feeling: too short, too cramped, not enough home coming feeling and totally under-produced. I am still angry for exactly those reasons.

And the cast… Especially THE MIX of the cast. Anyway, here is what I wrote in my review about the DVD set on Amazon (the title of my review is “To really boldly go!”:

“How can one but love the Star Trek: Voyager series? The cast is just astounding. A female badass captain who guides her crew with absolute iron will, a knife sharp and totally consistent Vulcan security officer, a holographic doctor that will have you rolling on the floor laughing with his wit, a gorgeous and impressively tough female chief engineer, a charming and witty conn officer, the never-ending good humoured Talaxian morale officer, his beautiful and Garbo-voiced Ocampa woman, the gentle but always stalwart first officer, an ensign that fights on in every adversity in spite of (almost) never getting his promotion and last but not least the super-goddess ex-borg in a slim-fit body suit, in every way as sharp minded as good old Spock! And that’s just the main characters, some of the others are almost as good. The ship itself is another important actor also, let’s not forget. I can only recommend this series. It’s especially full of good episodes if you – just as I do – appreciate the old saying: “To boldly go where no man has gone before..:” Because this show is the true embodiment of those words!” //Erik Brickman in Sweden.

I totally agree with what you said about Voyager doing humor the best. Another thing about it, the show had a feeling of family to it that I didn’t see in the other shows. The characters were more like people I could relate to.

    January 13, 2018 at 12:36 am

    • I loved the family thing! You really felt it in a way that just wasn’t there with the other shows. Thanks for the comment!
